I’m so glad you’re here and showing an interest in my small business! I absolutely LOVE making candles and wax melts and trying new colors and techniques to get to the end results! I had to start from somewhere and I want to fill you in on my journey! 🙃
When I got my first candle kit to try it out, it was a basic soy candle kit from Amazon. I could make up to 4 candles with four different fragrances and several color options if I chose. I looked into some websites for candle tutorials which gave suggestions to find candle making groups on Facebook for more ideas and support. Candle Science was a lifesaver for tutorials! I took a lot of notes from the websites and candle groups on FB and started there.🤓
A double boiler technique was the only way I could melt wax at that time so that is where I began. I made my first few candles and loved the end results, that I had to learn more. I researched and researched and took pages and pages of notes. A lot more goes into candle making than one would think. I mean don’t you just melt wax, pour in some fragrance to stir and then put in a jar with a wick and let it cure? Pffff, I wish! 🫠
Every wax has its own melting point and also a certain temperature that a fragrance should be added to it and stirred for a period of time before it is ready to pour. Then you have to make sure the right wick is chosen for your wax and vessel. All of those factors matter in the safeness and quality of the candle. Sure, you can get a good result with a number of variations of these supplies. And some waxes have multiple wicks that will work well with it. You just have to choose which one works best for you. I’ve learned that what works for some, might not work for me. Everyone’s candle making process is different. Not wrong, just different. So a TON of testing and research goes into candle making before you can even think about selling them. 🥵
I can say, I have found my favorite vessels with the tins I use now, because when a jar is much taller, the wax can have sink holes and a heat gun has to be used to smooth the tops to an even level. It can be a process when you have made a big batch of candles. The tins are also a modern and sleek look that I think can go in any home and look beautiful! After learning all about candles, I started dabbling in wax melts and those were a whole new joy. 🥰
Once I got the technique down and determined the certain supplies I wanted to stick with, the labels were my next excitement. For anyone who has followed me since I started, you know I have changed my labels a few times since then! I also had to come up with a name. I googled and used name generators, etc. to try to come up with a catchy name. But one night it hit me. I wanted it to be personal and mean something to me. I started out in my kitchen and worked my way into our spare room with a work bench and big wax melter. I asked my husband what he thought when I told him “Spare Room Candles” and he smiled. I knew that was it. After the labels were designed, then came my Facebook page and it has taken off ever since! Candles to wax melts which I switched up to wax bark! I now have my products in The Main Studio, downtown Blytheville, and also have this beautiful website! 🤍
I have loved my customers from day one and the support I have gotten from my family and local community has been so great! I love hearing how much people love my products and seeing repeating customers! It truly makes it all so wonderful! A small business is a ton of work, especially when you work another full time job on top of that. But I’m telling you, this has been something I’ve enjoyed so thoroughly and I’m so grateful to be where I am today with Spare Room Candles! 🥹
